If you aren't college educated, than really the only paying job available on a maternity ward would be a housekeeper. Hospitals sometimes offer various volunteer jobs, but obviously you don't get paid. If you are a nurse you should easily be able to find a job there.

Also Im not sure what type of training lactation consultants go through. If so you may have to take a class to specialize in either of these courses but there's Labor and Delievery, Neonatal (Nusery, I'm not sure it's exact name) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. .... I plan on getting my LPN's this August and then continuing on to college to get my RN's. It seems to be easier to get accepted into RN course in the colleges in my state if you're already an LPN...
